چکیده

We consider a linear complementarity problem (LCP) arisen from the Arrow-Debreu-Leontief competitive economy equilibrium where the LCP coefficient matrix is symmetric. We prove that the decision problem, to decide whether or not there exists a complementary solution, is NP-complete. Under certain conditions, an LCP solution is guaranteed to exist and we present a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) for computing such a solution, although the LCP solution set can be non-convex or non-connected. Our method is based on solving a quadratic social utility optimization problem (QP) and showing that a certain KKT point of the QP problem is an LCP solution. Then, we further show that such a KKT point can be approximated with running time O((2 ) log(12 ) log(log(12 )) in accuracy 2 ∈ (0, 1) and a polynomial in problem dimensions. We also report preliminary computational results which show that the method is highly effective.

An interior-point path-following algorithm for computing a Leontief economy equilibrium

In this paper, we present an interior-point path-following algorithm for computing a Leontief economy equilibrium, that is, an exchange market equilibrium with Leontief utility functions, which is known to be in the complexity class of PPAD-complete. It is known that an equilibrium corresponds to a solution of a system of complementarities, so we construct a homotopy to tackle this system. We p...

Market equilibrium under piecewise Leontief concave utilities

Leontief function is one of the most widely used function in economic modeling, for both production and preferences. However it lacks the desirable property of diminishing returns. In this paper, we consider piecewise Leontief concave (p-Leontief) utility function which consists of a set of Leontief-type segments with decreasing returns and upper limits on the utility. Leontief is a special cas...

Strategyproofness, Leontief Economies and the Kalai-Smorodinsky Solution

We present new characterizations of the Raiffa and Kalai-Smorodinsky solutions based on strategyproofness of an allocation mechanism for an underlying economy with Leontief preferences. Our first result shows that the 2-player Kalai-Smorodinsky solution is the unique bargaining solution which if Efficient, Symmetric, Scale Invariant and Strategyproof on a Leontief economy. Next we consider the ...

On the Approximation and Smoothed Complexity of Leontief Market Equilibria

We show that the problem of finding an ǫ-approximate Nash equilibrium of an n× n two-person games can be reduced to the computation of an (ǫ/n)-approximate market equilibrium of a Leontief economy. Together with a recent result of Chen, Deng and Teng, this polynomial reduction implies that the Leontief market exchange problem does not have a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme, that is, ...

The complexity of equilibria: Hardness results for economies via a correspondence with games

We give a reduction from any two-player game to a special case of the Leontief exchange economy, with the property that the Nash equilibria of the game and the equilibria of the market are in one-to-one correspondence. Our reduction exposes a computational hurdle inherent in solving certain families of market equilibrium problems: finding an equilibrium for Leontief economies is at least as har...
